A Thought Experiment: Witricity

Post by admin

I’m going to forego my usual thought experiment introduction and just leave it at this:

What happens to cities, transit, cable, etc when Witricity (or something comparable, but with a less awful name) is scaled up and as common as an electrical outlet?

Watch, contemplate and discuss:

    this already exists, see http://www.bombardier.com/en/transportation/sustainability/technology/primove-catenary-free-operation

Whether anything happens is another question. This is more expensive than wire. I wonder if this may be best for electric buses with ultracapacitors. This should be easier to connect to than trolleywire (but not really any better for trains connecting to a single wire) the question is when ultracapacitors get good enough and cheap enough so that you only need to install this at a few stops or uphill climbs.

too bad it ‘witricifies’ AC power while everything we use runs on DC power. as the world tries to convert grid systems to DC, engineers continue to invent ways to move AC power.

basically witricity (AC) sounds quite inefficient when connected to green technology (DC), but i see where they’re going with this. still with all this information of how cell phones harm the body coming up in the news, i question the safety of electricity waves being shot through the air.
