  • The new look of the Petřín cable car in Prague has been revealed. A contest was held to design the body and interior of two similar cable car cabins, with each cabin having a capacity to hold up to 120 passengers. There were 26 entries with the winner was a local designer. The new cabin design has an open and airy ambiance with windows on all sides of the cabin and on the ceiling. The funicular has been servicing this area for almost 130 years and these new cabins will replace the third version from the 1980s. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) plans to announce a tender by the end of the year to build the design. The system is anticipated to reopen at the end of 2024.
  • TransLink is onto the next stage of work to advance the Burnaby Mountain Gondola. TransLink published a request for proposals (RFP) which launched the bidding process for a contractor to develop design concepts for the multimodal public transit hub at the Production Way-University Station. This RFP is part of the full business case needed to secure funding to build the gondola. See a related Weekly Roundup hereSCJ Alliance, the parent company of the Gondola Project, has been retained to provide gondola expertise for this project.
  • More information has been released about the cause of the cable car accident in Italy that killed 14 people . The investigation found poor maintenance was a major factor in the failure of the haul rope. Two-thirds of the haul rope was corroded. There is no record of maintenance or assessment of the haul rope being conducted. With correct maintenance, the deterioration of a single strand should have been detached and addressed before continuing to operate. The report highlights the poor rope maintenance and disabling of the emergency brake on the track rope as the causes of the accident. See a related Weekly Roundup here.
