West Virginia State Parks officials are hopeful new aerial tramways will be up and running next year, replacing two tramways that have been in operation for more than a half-century. They have carried visitors on scenic round-trip journeys to the depths of two river gorges, serving Hawks Nest and Pipestem Resort state parks. The Hawks Nest aerial tramway closed June 6, when a routine inspection turned up a safety issue requiring substantial remediation.
The Table Mountain Aeria Cableway Company (TMACC) is halting operations for five weeks at the end of July to allow maintenance on the tourist attraction’s upper and lower stations and cabins. The longer than usual, more comprehensive closure is needed to meet safety standards on this cable way in Cape Town, South Africa. According to a spokesperson, the focus will be on the track-ropes which carry the majority of the weight of the cable cars, the brackets from which the cabins are suspended, and the hydraulic braking system situated at the Lower Station.
