The Likoni cable car in Africa is being reevaluated due to the construction of a floating bridge. The cable car was planned to be an alternative to the ferry crossing over the Likoni Channel. The Transport Principal Secretary said the bridge is not a substitute for the cable car and rather the decision to move forward with the cable car is up to the sponsors. Translink launched phase 2 of the Burnaby Mountain Gondola project. Phase 2 will include additional public engagement and evaluation of the three route options. From the beginning of public engagement, Translink has identified the community’s concerns, including safety and security, all-weather travel, transit connectivity, and more. The cable car project in Kandy, Sri Lanka is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. A Korean entrepreneur won the business rights for the project and has plans to advance the 2.2km system that will connect downtown to the Hanthana Mountain, and sacred Buddhist sites. Construction is expected to begin next year with a total investment of $35 million.
Ruins of a 1960’s cable car show the long history of this technology. The unique sea cable car system was built in the southern end of Sidi Infi port in Africa by Spanish colonizers to transport people and goods over shallow waters, from ships to land . According to local media, the cable car was abandoned in the mid-1970’s when the Spanish colonizers left the city.
