- For the second time, the Sea to Sky gondola in Canada has been vandalized. On September 14 the haul rope was deliberately cut sending the cabins crashing to the ground. Damages are expected to be in the millions. Check out Gondola Project’s coverage of the original vandalism in 2019 here.
- Table Mountain aerial cable car in Cape Town, Africa has resumed operations as the tourism economy slowly restarts. Strict health and safety protocols are in place with capacities reduced to meet physical distancing requirements. Typically the cableway carries 65 people at a time, but capacity will now be limited to 27.
- Colorado’s ski resorts are preparing for a winter season during coronavirus. Ski towns were hotspots for Colorado’s COVID-19 outbreak earlier in 2020, motivating resorts to create plans for customer and employee health. Local health departments and ski resort owners are working together to create a uniform approach, but with each resort taking different measures for controlling visitor numbers.
- Lagos, Nigeria has a Strategic Transport Master Plan which includes three cable car projects. The plan also includes six rail lines, one monorail, 14 bus rapid transit (BRT) routes, and over 20 water routes. Currently two rail lines are being constructed and are expected to begin operating by 2022.
- A firm in Los Angeles, California released new architectural design concepts for a cable car that would transport passengers from Union Station directly into Dodgers Stadium. They propose it would move approximately 5,500 people per hour using environmentally friendly technology. SCJ Alliance is a part of this project.
