- Niseko Village may be getting a significant expansion if Sapporo City’s bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics is successful. Located on the mountainous northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, the Village has been identified as a potential venue for four alpine events, following an assessment of the slope, difficulty, and snow quality of the resort’s runs. If Sapporo City is selected as the host, Niseko Village would add new gondolas, lifts and terrain.
- The Adivaram-Lakkidi cable car project in India is continuing its forward momentum. This major tourism project is planned to begin with around 50 cable cars, replacing the need to travel 23km of road with a 3.7km cable car ride. The total travel time is estimated to be 12 minutes.
- After being down for a little more than a week, Steamboat Resort’s new $15 Million gondola reopened December 5. The fastest gondola in North America, the new system first opened November 23 but was shut down the next day due to a gearbox malfunction that occurred after-hours. The gondola has eight-person cabins and a quicker speed, increasing hourly passenger capacity by 38 percent.
- The Dursey Island cable car celebrated 50 years this week! Significant growth in tourism has prompted interest in updating the system. Read more in a previous Weekly Roundup post, about the push for a new €7 million cable car.
- Kishtwar’s Public Works Department, PWD, in India installed a ropeway system within 5 days. The aerial ropeway system is a cradle box that has to be manually pulled across the river. This is not a typical system but demonstrates how even a simple design can have a significant benefit to a community. This ropeway cuts the travel distance for goods by 18km.
