A quick look at some of the things that happened this week in the world of urban gondolas, cable cars and cable propelled transit:
- This week the Ministry of Public Works in Santiago, Chile publicly presented its plan to build the Teleférico Bicentenario. The system will connect the communities of Providencia and Huechuraba and reduce travel times from 45 minutes to 12 minutes. The cable car’s capacity is set at 3,000 pphpd and is expected to be complete by 2018.
- Evo Morales has announced that the Yellow Line (Línea Amarilla) in La Paz, Bolivia will be inaugurated next week on September 10. At 3.8km in length with 13 towers and 169 cabins, this system will the largest of the 3 cable car lines.
- The World, a group of man-made islands in Dubai, may one day be serviced by a cable car connection. Among a number of other transport options (i.e. floating bridge) that were studied, a gondola system was deemed the cost effective. The concept has support but a final decision has not been made yet.
