A quick look at some of the things that happened this week in the world of cable cars, urban gondolas, and cable propelled transit:
- Telluride and nearby municipalities are looking to create a Regional Transit Authority (RTA) to better coordinate regional transit planning. However, exactly how a new RTA will affect funding and financing for Telluride & Mountain Village Gondola remains unanswered.
- Preliminary plans and renderings for Dallas Midtown, a redevelopment project in Dallas, Texas reveals that a gondola system may be part of the overall proposal. This particular area has been in decline but the new development plans hope to spur reinvestment in the neighbourhood.
- Council in Nelson, New Zealand approved a $15,000 grant to study the feasibility of a gondola lift. This proposal appears to have wide support from the community, including support from the mayor.
- The reopening of the Christchurch Gondola was met record crowds as thousands of visitors streamed in from all over for a chance to ride the revamped system.
- A second cable car line opens in China’s Huashan and was put into trial operations this week. Reports indicate that the system is 4.2km long and took a total of four years to construct.
