A quick look at some of the things that happened this week in the world of cable cars, urban gondolas, and cable propelled transit:
- Business Insider names Peak 2 Peak gondola as one of the top “100 trips to take in your lifetime”.
- Rio will soon see another urban cable car as the Teleferico da Providencia is set to open in May 2013. Once complete, this system will be 721m in length and is estimated to cost R$75 million (US$38 million). However, despite small tower footprints, many residents along the alignment face eviction.
- Plans to upgrade the Arthurs Seat Chairlift into an enclosed gondola is estimated to cost $14 million. The cable lift has been closed since 2006 after the operator failed to properly maintain the system which resulted in several accidents between 2003-2006.
- The proposal for a Mt. Wellington Cable Car appears to have more support. Based on an online polled conducted by Mt. Wellington Cableway Company, 72% of the 1700 respondents would like to see this development move forward. In comparison, based on a survey conducted by the Wellington Park Management Trust, only 25 of 264 surveyees supported the proposal.
