A quick look at some of the things that happened this week in the world of cable cars, urban gondolas, and cable propelled transit:
- As part of a plan to rebuild Venezuela’s tourism sector, construction work is under way to reconstruct the Mérida Cable Car – once the longest and highest Aerial Tram in the world.
- In what’s becoming an unfortunate trend, yet another person dies when a hand-made, vernacular cable car broke plunging several people into Pakistan’s Swat River. This is becoming more and more of a problem and is something the industry has all the tools and wherewithal to combat.
- Doppelmayr opens a chairlift in Austria whereby 1/3 of the system’s power will be provided by photovoltaic system. The company claims this to be a world’s first.
- Queenstown, NZ to reopen their bike park soon. Apparently the park is the only gondola-accessed park in the Southern Hemisphere.
- A Lego enthusiast campaigns to have San Francisco’s iconic cable cars immortalized in a Lego set – unfortunately, he’s only imagining it in a hyper-miniaturized and stripped-down form. I say, if you’re going to do it, do it right and go all the way. Give it the full-on treatment that VW’s famous Camper recently received:
