A few highlights from around the world of Urban Gondolas, Gondola Transit, and Cable Propelled Transit:
- An entry in Vancouver’s re:CONNECT competition proposes a “Park-2-Park” gondola connecting False Creek Flats and Stanley Park.
- The New York Times Magazine profiles the Mashpi Rainforest Biodiversity Reserve. In the article makes passing mention of an under-construction “aerial tram from which four cable cars will glide like tropical ski gondolas through the tree canopy.” Does anyone know anything about this installation? The mention of four cable cars is particularly bizarre. Any information would be appreciated.
- India’s Gulmarg Gondola to get an update by Poma. We only mention this as the Gulmarg Gondola holds the distinction of being the world’s second highest gondola. If Wikipedia is to believed, the system starts at 2,600 meters and ascends to a height of 4,200 meters. Pretty impressive.
- Hong Kong residents are taking a “dim view” of a 7 to 11 % fare increase for that city’s famed Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car.
- Back in India, the Himachal Pradesh Cabinet has “agreed in principle” to explore using ropeway technology to move apples throughout the state.
- A working group has been set up to decide the fate of Ireland’s Dursey Island Cable Car. As we mentioned previously, the Dursey Island Cable Car is an essential link for the isolated cattle farming community of Dursey. Eliminating the link (as has been proposed) would all but destroy this 2,000 year old community.
