A few highlights from around the world of Urban Gondolas and Cable Propelled Transit:
- Gordon Harris, CEO of the Simon Fraser University Trust, finally speaks out in support of of the Burnaby Mountain Gondola. Mr. Harris had recently come under fire for refusing to comment on the project despite being the brainchild of the entire project.
- Transport for London (TfL) opens tender invitation for corporate naming rights for the Thames Cable Car. TfL expects the scheme to generate £50m, but marketing experts expect it to generate much less.
- Sticking with London: It’s probably not surprising to read that London is seeking corporate sponsors for the cable car as London Mayor Boris Johnson admitted last week that the system may, indeed, wind up being funded by the public sector. Anti-gondola Assembly member John Biggs speaks out against the plan further calling it “not a serious transport project.”
- A Norwegian developer contemplates an urban gondola to link Oslo’s waterfront and the planned Ekeberg sculpture garden.
- In protest of increased cable car fares in San Francisco, reporter Will Reisman races the 120 year old cable car system – and wins!
