- CNN Go Asia counts down the ten best ropeways in Japan.
- The Sentosa Island Cable Cars return from a year long hiatus. The overhaul made the vehicles more accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, added informational touchscreens to each cabin and expanded system capacity. It also added crystalline LED lights to the exterior of the cabins and the world’s first 7-Star VIP Jewelled Cabin, whatever that means. Somehow Swarovski was involved. Seriously.
- Arial Kanimer writes about the return of Roosevelt Island’s “Flying Buses” in the New York Times. It’s a decent read but lacks any and all historical context. When Kanimer states that the trams “never caught on in the city,” he is entirely mistaken.
- The Huddersfield Daily Examiner reports that plans have resurfaced for a half-mile long gondola in the small city of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire UK. The system, which had originally been planned in tandem with the HD One shopping complex, will transport shoppers from the Galpharm Stadium to the Media Centre on Southgate. HD One boss, Laurence Antill expects this system to be the first urban gondola system in the UK, saying it’s not a matter of if, but “a matter of when” the project will be realized.
- The New York Times reviews MoMA’s “Small Scale, Big Change” exhibit which includes a strong analysis of the Caracas Metrocable.
- A Free-market Urbanist rails against the Oakland Airport Connector and airport connectors in general – sorry, it was a very slow cable news week.
