Moneyball

I happen to be a closet baseball fan.

I readily admit the game is hopelessly boring, but I find it fascinating nevertheless. It should come as no surprise then, that I’m quite fond of the film Moneyball and the book that inspired it by Michael Lewis. I’ve recently been re-reading that book and have come to the conclusion that the themes of the book and the ideas it conjures in the mind go far beyond simple application to The Great American Pastime. In many ways, it’s a metaphor for a lot we try and accomplish in life.

Consider the following quote:

“What begins as a failure of the imagination ends as a market inefficiency: when you rule out an entire class of people from doing a job simply by their appearance, you are less likely to find the best person for the job.”

Now apply that to what we’re doing here at The Gondola Project. Replace the word “people” with “technology” and you begin to see where I’m going with this.

(Note: It’s been a hectic week – so sorry for not having more posts. Thanks so much to Julia and Nick for pitching in!)

Gondola Fondue

In the past, we’ve seen that Gondola technology is extremely flexible.

It can adapt itself literally into anything, whether it be a Gondola Sauna, or a Gondola Music Concert, Cable Lifts have got you covered.

However, one can argue that public transit is pretty wacky in general – especially with the recently held 3rd annual No Pants Subway Ride. While I’ll admit that rail certainly encourages some cheeky behaviour, gondolas are undoubtedly the cheesiest of all.

Evidence you say? Ladies and Gentlemen, I proudly introduce to you Vercorin, Switzerland’s fondue gondola. Enjoy!

PS: A big thank-you goes out to Damien for the link!

PS PS: Anyone know what they’re saying?

Happy Holidays From The Gondola Project

We tried to find one in a gondola, but this is the best we could come up with. Have a great holidays! See you in the New Year! Image via flickr user whistlerblackcomb.

My first born child is getting photographed with these four Santas or no one gets anything for Christmas.

USA Highways as a subway map

Graphic Designer Cameron Booth's take on how to visualize the United States Interstate system. Image via flickr.http://www.flickr.com/photos/senexprime/6529113417/

This is a really cool design of the United States Highways (routes) mapped in the style of a subway map. It was created by Cameron Booth, who has also done similar styled maps for the country’s interstate routes.

The famous Route 66 is the solid black line that starts in Chicago, snaking its way to all the way west to Los Angeles.

Click either map for a larger version of the map on Flickr.

Urban Skiing

Hitting the slopes in style. Image by Flickr User felixrioux

Winter is almost upon us and here at Gondola Project, we love skiing but we also love the vivacity and vibrancy of urban living.

The problem is, alpine facilities are located, most times, hours away from the city centre and driving your car there is such a pain in the butt (not to mention, highly unsustainable).

So the question is, is there a way to merge the best of both worlds into one fun activity? Well, we can officially confirm that it is indeed possible. Check it out!

And did we forget to mention: Gondolas not required. ;)

Note 1: For the transit nerds, the best part is, if you watch the entire video, he actually uses a bus to get back up top.

Note 2: The clip is from the movie All.I.Can

Alpine Coaster (Sommerrodelbahn) – Mieders, Austria

For many people, travelling up and down a mountainside on a gondola provides enough enjoyment and excitement to last them an entire lifetime.

But for those times when a cable car ride isn’t enough, we have the Sommerrodelbahn Alpine Coaster - which is pretty darn fast.

A sommerrodelbahn can reach travel speeds of 40km/h! Image by Flickr User Nassfeld.

Hm…. roller coaster transit anyone? Enjoy the video!
