World Map Update (Sept 2017): Urban Gondolas, Cable Cars and Cable Propelled Transit

Post by nickchu

Since our last update to Gondola Project’s world map six months ago, urban cable cars have continued to make their presence felt around the world.

For this update, we have been able to track a total of 28 new proposals — that’s about 8 more proposals than the preceding six months. Eight projects have also been updated, but unfortunately, three of these proposals have been cancelled/indefinitely postponed.

The only new urban cable car opening took place in Korea’s second largest city, Busan (pop: 3.4 million) where the Busan Air Cruise was inaugurated in June 2017. However, readers should be happy to note that La Paz/El Alto’s fifth Cable Propelled Transit (CPT) system, the Orange Line (Spanish: Línea Naranja) is scheduled to open for service during the first week of October 2017.

With more than 150 active proposals in the various stages of planning, design and construction, the amount of growth and interest in the urban ropeway market has undoubtedly reached new heights. To many city builders, this upward trend comes at no surprise as the world’s rapid pace of urbanization has inevitably forced decision-makers and citizens to examine alternative  forms of transport.

As always, a big thank you goes out to our readers who have reached out to us and provided invaluable insight and links to dozens of projects. In case we’ve missed anything, please leave a comment below, or find us on Facebook / Twitter.

NEW SYSTEMS ADDED

Note: system’s documented (mostly) represent ropeways built in a non-ski lift/urban setting and are no longer limited to just mass transit cable cars. The map’s scope was expanded since the term Cable Propelled Transit (CPT) or mass transit cable cars was failing to fully capture all the ropeway activity happening in the urban market.
