Kuelap Cable Car – A Private Public Partnership Project to Improve Tourism

Post by nickchu

Significant progress is being made for the Kuelap Cable Car (Spanish: teleférico de Kuelap) in the Amazonas Region of Northern Peru. Twenty six cabins arrived on site last week to facilitate the construction process.

Kuelap is an ancient walled fortress inhabited by the Chachapoyas in 600 AD. Situated 3,000m above sea level (asl), this attraction was previously accessible to only a handful of adventure seekers.

However, this will all change as the system is scheduled to open to the public by July 2016. Instead of a 3-4 hour hike, the 4km cable car will transport visitors from 2,000m asl to 3,000m asl in just 20 minutes.

Tourism in Peru is growing tremendously year by year and the cable car is expected to help promote greater visitation and diversify its tourist offerings. The aerial lift is being implemented via a Private Public Partnership (PPP) between the government, domestic construction firm, Ingenieros Civiles y Contratistas Generales S.A (ICCGSA) and French ropeway manufacturer, POMA. The US$20 million cable system will be operated and maintained by POMA on a concession for 20 years. This project is great example of how the private sector, the government and the ropeway industry can work together to improve transportation and tourism.
